Flooring in areas with equipment sensitive to static charges should be specified based on its ability to mitigate tribo-charging from personnel and mobile equipment, by transferring the charge to ground. Specifically, the flooring needs to create a meaningful SURFACE GROUND PLANE to ensure consistently low energy generation and discharge risk. When evaluating an ESD floor for its capacity to control static, you need to verify that the floor will not generate more than 100V when someone walks on it. The total system resistance of the person walking on the ground is less than or equal to 3.5 x 107 or 35 meg-ohms maximum.
When your personnel and electrical equipment are on the same floor, as long as the ESD flooring has a resistance to ground of over 25,000 ohms, this floor can be used in most situations. Does the floor need to be properly grounded, if so how often or many ground points?
Flooring systems need to have an effective surface ground plane with continuity to ground. The overall number of grounding points is based on the surface area, breaks in continuity, and location of sensitive equipment. An electrical design engineer will then determine the exact number of ground points for the coating systems.
How are these floors cleaned to maintain ESD/Conductive properties?
Simply, mop with clean water and a light cleaner specified by the ESD coating manufacturer. We will provide a comprehensive floor maintenance program at time of commissioning.
Do the conductive properties have to go through the entire thickness of the coating system?
No. Sometimes the flooring system is over engineered. ESD/Conductivity properties can exist throughout the thickness. When we are collaborating in the design stages, we can value-engineer the floor so it can be built up using less expensive resins and top coated with the ESD/Conductive finishes. We can establish electrostatic protected areas (EPA's) so that you mitigate threats where you need them and save money where you don’t.
What’s the difference between anti-static and conductive coatings?
The difference is the speed in which the electrical charge is discharged to ground. A conductive coating dissipates the charge faster. It's measured in ohms resistance. A conductive coating ranges at 25,000 -1 million ohms and still requires the use of an embedded ground plane. An ESD coating range is 1 million -1 billion ohms.
Do you need to re-coat after a period of time? The simple answer is that coatings that endure heavy traffic wear down faster. Coatings with light traffic can last over 20 years.
